The pressure to compromise didn't end with Rome

The Pax Romana offered real peace and real prosperity, on one condition: acknowledge that Rome, and the emperor behind it, was the one actually holding your life together. Christians could go along with that story or challenge it by insisting Jesus alone deserved that place. Most of the pressure wasn’t persecution in the dramatic sense — it was the much quieter cost of being seen as difficult, ungrateful, or bad for business.

That kind of pressure hasn’t gone away; it’s just wearing different clothes now. Whatever system currently promises you security, belonging, or prosperity in exchange for a small, reasonable-sounding compromise is playing the same role Rome once did.

Questions to reflect on

• What’s the modern equivalent of “burn a pinch of incense to Caesar” in your own life — a small compromise that would buy you safety, approval, or ease?
• Who or what are you actually trusting to hold your life together, if you’re honest about where your security really comes from?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you alone hold my life together. Show me the small compromises I make to buy safety, approval or ease, and give me the courage to refuse them. Let my security rest in you, not in whatever promises it today. Amen.
