Reigning now, even if no one sees it

If chapter 20 is right that those who stayed faithful under pressure are already reigning with Christ right now, in a way the world can’t see, then the small, unglamorous faithfulness of your own ordinary week — the temptation you didn’t give in to, the truth you told when a lie would have been easier — isn’t a footnote while you wait for “real” reward later. It already counts as reigning.

That’s worth sitting with regardless of which of the three views of the millennium you land on. The debate is about a number; the promise underneath it is the same in every view: nothing done in loyalty to Christ is ever wasted, even when nobody is watching and no one will ever know.

• Where this week did faithfulness cost you something small — and did it feel like it counted for anything at the time?
• If you already believed you were reigning with Christ right now, hidden but real, what would you do differently today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you that nothing done in loyalty to you is ever wasted, even when no one sees it. Give me faithfulness in the small, ordinary choices of this week, and let me live today as one who already belongs to your reign. Amen.
