Are you ready to shine?

John’s vision isn’t decoration before the “real” content starts — it’s the lens for everything that follows. The church exists to shine, the way seven lampstands shine: not on her own fuel, but held alight by the one standing among them. Nothing more is asked of her. Nothing less will do.

That raises an uncomfortable question about your own week, not just the church in general. Shining on your own fuel looks like performance — effort, image management, running on empty and hoping no one notices. Being held alight looks different: quieter, less impressive to watch, but able to keep burning long after your own strength would have run out.

Questions to reflect on

• This week, has your faith mostly been running on your own fuel, or has it actually been fed by something outside you?
• If Jesus asked you the same question he’s really asking the church here — “are you ready?” — what would your honest answer be right now?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you stand among the lampstands. Forgive me for trying to shine on my own fuel. Keep me burning with your light, not my performance, so that I am ready when you come. Amen.
