The Horses Are Not the Boss

The Picture

John saw four horses gallop by — a white one, a red one, a black one, and a pale one. They remind us that in this world, sometimes hard things happen: arguments, sickness, not having enough. That’s true, and it’s okay to notice that hard things happen sometimes.

But here’s the important part: the horses don’t get to gallop wherever they want. Every single one of them only moves when Jesus says so. Jesus is the one who opens the scroll. Jesus is the one in charge. The horses are not the boss of the world — Jesus is. And Jesus is good.

So even on hard days, we can remember: Jesus is still in charge, and he’s still taking care of us.

“Jesus wins, and he loves us.”

Ask: “Who is really in charge, the horses or Jesus?” (Jesus!)

Activity

Who’s the Boss? Game: Have children gallop in place like horses when you say “horses!” — but the moment you say “Jesus!” they must freeze right away and put their hands up like they’re cheering, because Jesus is the one truly in charge. Play a few rounds, mixing up the timing.

Coloring option: Color a simple picture of four horses with Jesus, shining brightly, above them — showing he’s in charge of everything that happens.

Simple Prayer

“Jesus, even on hard days, thank you for being in charge and taking care of me. Amen.”

Note for the Teacher

Do not describe what each horse or rider represents (war, famine, death, and so on) — keep it at the level of “sometimes hard things happen in the world.” The reassurance, not the inventory of troubles, is the point. Land firmly on Jesus being in control and good.
