The Picture

Here’s a Christmas story you may not have heard before. John saw a beautiful woman about to have a baby — and a big, scary dragon waiting nearby, hoping to hurt the baby the moment he was born.

But guess what? The baby was Jesus, and the dragon could not stop him. The moment Jesus was born, God swooped in and kept him safe, and the dragon lost. Jesus grew up, and he wins — every single time — over anything that ever tries to hurt him or hurt us.

Even when someone tries to stop God’s plans, they can’t. Jesus always wins, and he keeps us safe too.

Our Refrain

“Jesus wins, and he loves us.”

Ask: “Could the dragon stop baby Jesus?” (No! Jesus always wins!)

Activity

Safe and Sound Game: One child (or the leader) gently “reaches” toward a soft baby doll or stuffed animal representing baby Jesus, while the rest of the children say “Jesus is safe!” and mime scooping the doll up into a protective hug. Repeat a few times so the ending — safety and victory — is what sticks.

Coloring option: Color a simple picture of a bright star over a baby in a manger, with the words “Jesus is safe” underneath.

Simple Prayer

“Jesus, thank you that nothing can ever stop you. Thank you for keeping me safe too. Amen.”

Note for the Teacher

This is the session most likely to include a “dragon,” so keep it extremely brief and non-visual: mention the dragon only as “a bad guy who tried and failed,” with zero description of appearance or menace. Move to safety and victory as quickly as possible. The point is Christmas-story-familiar and entirely comforting: baby Jesus is safe, and the bad guy loses.
