1. Copycats

Play a round of copying: one child does an action, the next copies it, and so on down the line. By the end it has usually gone wrong.

A copy is never quite the original. Chapter 13 is about the biggest copy ever attempted.

2. Satan calls for backup

Satan is tired of losing — and he has lost in every chapter so far. So he brings in help.

A beast comes up out of the sea. It looks enormous and terrifying. And then something happens: one of its heads is wounded, fatally — and the wound heals. Everyone is amazed. Everyone follows it.

Now, that sounds familiar. Somebody died and came back?

3. Why it is not the same

It is worth slowing down here, because this is the point of the chapter.

• The beast was never actually dead. It was wounded.
• When Jesus rose, his friends were overjoyed. Here, everyone is afraid — they follow the beast because it is powerful, not because they love it.

Then the beast starts insulting God and going after God’s people. Only those whose names are in the Lamb’s book of life see through it — and it costs them.

4. The second beast

That is still not enough. A second beast comes, and this one is sneakier: it looks like a lamb and speaks like a dragon.

It does miracles. It makes statues talk. And it forces everyone to wear a mark showing whose side they are on. Refuse, and you cannot buy or sell anything.

5. The fake trinity

Line the three up and the whole thing becomes obvious:

• the dragon — pretending to be the Father
• the first beast — wounded and healed, pretending to be Jesus
• the second beast — doing miracles and pointing at the first, pretending to be the Holy Spirit

It is a forgery. An impressive one, but a forgery.

6. How to spot it

Verse 11 hands us the test, and it is one children can actually use: it looked like a lamb and sounded like a dragon.

So: does it look kind but sound cruel? Does it promise safety but demand that you frighten somebody else to get it? Does it want you to belong by making somebody else not belong?

That is how you spot it — not by the look, by the sound.

7. And the number

666. Whole books have been written about it, and here is the plain point: in Revelation seven is the number of what is complete. Six is what falls short. Three sixes is falling short, three times over.

The dragon and his two beasts. Three tries. Three failures. The number is a joke at their expense.

Memory verse: “This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.” (Revelation 13:10)

Look for yourself

Two quiet minutes. Nobody has to say anything out loud.

Put the two of them side by side: the Lamb, and the beast that is copying him.

Look carefully. What gives the copy away? It is not the size, and it is not the noise.

Now look at the marks. The beast’s mark goes on the hand and the forehead — on what you do and on what you think. God’s mark goes on the forehead too.

Where would somebody watching you this week have seen God’s name written?

8. Prayer

Jesus, thank you that you are the real one and not a copy. Help us to listen to how things sound, not just look at how they shine. Give us patience when standing with you costs something. Amen.

Appendix: Ideas for leaders

Opening activity: The copying game, or show a real logo next to a slightly-wrong version and ask them to spot the difference.

Craft idea: Two masks — one that looks gentle, one that looks fierce. Hold the gentle one up and speak in the fierce voice. It stays with them.

Questions:

1. How do you tell a copy from the real thing?
2. Have you ever seen someone be kind on the outside and unkind underneath?
3. Why is “looks like a lamb, sounds like a dragon” a useful test?

Song suggestions: A song about Jesus being the true King; something steady rather than loud.

Prep note: Children will want to know who the beast “is” today. The honest answer is that Revelation describes a pattern that keeps reappearing rather than one person — and the test in verse 11 works in any century.
