The small scroll (Ch. 10)
Chapter 10.
Judgment alone has not turned people’s hearts, so the book changes tack: what comes now is what it calls the mystery of God himself, and the part the churches are given in it.
A mighty angel appears, described the same way John described Jesus in chapter 1 - and holds a little scroll. This deliberately echoes the larger scroll Jesus alone was found worthy to open back in chapter 5. John is told to eat this scroll: sweet in his mouth, the way good news is, and bitter in his stomach - a taste of what is coming in the next chapter. In the book’s account the decisive victory was won at the cross; the little scroll says a costly part is still left for the churches, carrying that news to the nations.
Before that part is spelled out, one detail is placed deliberately: the angel plants one foot on the sea and one on the land (Revelation 10:5) - the very two places the beasts will rise from in chapter 13. Whatever is coming, the picture says, God already stands over both.
