The small scroll (Ch. 10)
Chapter 10.
Judgment alone hasn’t turned people’s hearts - so now a new mystery is revealed: the mystery of God himself, and what he’s asking of his church.
A mighty angel appears, described the same way John described Jesus in chapter 1 - and holds a little scroll. This deliberately echoes the larger scroll Jesus alone was found worthy to open back in chapter 5. John is told to eat this scroll: sweet in his mouth, like the gospel itself, but turning bitter in his stomach - a taste of what’s coming in the next chapter. Jesus already secured the decisive victory at the cross; this little scroll shows there’s still a costly, essential role left for the church to carry that victory to the nations.
Before that role is spelled out, one detail reassures: the angel plants one foot on the sea and one on the land (Revelation 10:5) - the very two places the beasts will rise from in chapter 13. Whatever is coming, God is already standing over it, in full control.
