What is Armageddon? Will there be one final battle?

“Armageddon” has become shorthand in popular culture for total, world-ending war - and Revelation 16 does describe armies gathering at a place by that name for a final showdown.
The name itself points somewhere specific: “Har-Megiddo,” the hill country by Megiddo, a place already loaded with history by the time John wrote - the site of Deborah’s and Barak’s unlikely victory, Gideon’s, Elijah’s contest with the prophets of Baal, and King Josiah’s costly last stand. Every one of those Megiddo stories has the same shape: the weak and outnumbered overturning the seemingly invincible. Naming the final confrontation after that hill isn’t primarily a geography lesson - it’s a signal about how this battle gets won: not by superior force, but by the same pattern God has used before.
