Is hell a literal fire forever? What is heaven really like?

This question touches something very personal for a lot of people, and Christians who take the Bible equally seriously have landed in different places on the exact mechanics of it - literal unending fire, a real but different kind of ongoing separation, or an ending of existence altogether.
What Revelation seems most concerned to communicate isn’t a technical description of temperature or duration, but a relationship: heaven is the natural result of total closeness with God - every good thing we treasure (light, joy, safety, belonging) flows from being near him. Hell, correspondingly, is what’s left when that closeness is refused - not so much a punishment bolted on from outside as the very real absence of the God who is the source of every good thing. Whatever the exact mechanics, the weight of the text falls on an invitation, not a threat: come near, while the door is open.
