Are the seals, trumpets, and bowls the same events three times, or three separate sequences?
Read straight through, it can look like the world ends three separate times - once when the seals finish, again with the trumpets, again with the bowls - which raises a fair question about whether these are sequential (one after another) or parallel (the same territory, revisited with more intensity each time).
Revelation’s structure gives some real clues that these are the second: each series builds toward a similar climactic ending (cosmic upheaval, divine appearance), each is patterned on the plagues of Egypt with increasing severity, and each seems to escalate the same core message - creation groaning under human rebellion, and a world running out of false securities to hide behind - rather than introducing three unrelated disasters. Many careful readers describe the book’s shape as a spiral rather than a straight line: circling back over the same territory from different angles, each pass revealing something the previous one didn’t quite show, rather than a strict step-by-step countdown.
