Will there be a 'rapture' where Christians suddenly disappear?
Reading time: 1 minute
Many people have heard about a moment when believers will suddenly vanish from earth, taken up to be with Jesus while everyone else is “left behind.” It’s a widely taught idea, and if that’s what you grew up with, you’re in good company - a lot of sincere believers hold it.
Looking closely at the passages most often used to support it - 1 Thessalonians 4, Matthew 24’s “one taken, one left,” John 14’s “many rooms” - they actually seem to point the other way: Jesus coming down to be with his people on a renewed earth, not believers being snatched away from it. Revelation’s own ending (chapters 21-22) fits that same pattern: God’s home comes down to be with humanity, not the reverse.
This doesn’t require throwing out anyone’s faith journey - just a closer look at what these specific texts say.
